What is the Freedom of Expression Response Team?
A group of Student Affairs staff who respond and support when there’s student expression on campus. They are often present throughout events, and regularly collaborate with student leaders to support the event’s smooth functioning.
Why are they there?
To support and uphold student’s first amendment rights, often from counter-protesters, in alignment with the UC Davis Principles of Community as well as time, place, and manner considerations
What do they do?
- Promote student safety and peaceful participation
- Support freedom of expression and educate on free speech policy
- Help to prevent conflict or situations escalating
- Support students affected by offensive speech
- Encourage debate and dialogue
- Assist in preventing disruption of normal campus activities
- Advocate for student concerns
- Assist students when requested
What don’t they do?
- They don’t control student expression
- They don’t act authoritatively
- As content neutral attendees, they don’t argue or debate
